THE OUTSIDERS: A Sense of Belonging

All the characters in the story want a sense of belonging. Some characters feel they don't belong and some feel like they do belong. Some of the characters feel left out when it comes to a sense of belonging, and some feel like they have to be a completely different person to feel like they belong. Everyone has a sense of belonging in their hearts, because no everything is black and white.

One of the characters on the novel that i feel think he feels he doesn't belong is our main character Ponyboy Curtis. One is that he thinks his older brother Darry hates him because of he thinks and what he likes to do. Anothers reason is that most Greasers have dropped out of school, while Ponyboy is the only one in school, getting good grades, and the All Star in his highschool track team. Another reason is that he feels he doesn't belong because he is the youngest in the gang. Steve Randle, one of the members in the Greaser gang really makes him feel he doesn't belong, because he thinks he is just a tag-along kid and a runt. My last reason is that because he feels he doesn't belong, he tries to be a completely different person to feel he belongs when in actuality, he is actually caring and sensitive. Like in the book, when Ponyboy and Johnny were hiding out in the church, Johnny wanted to turn himself in, so he wouldn't cause any trouble for Ponyboy. But when Ponyboy got mad, Johnny started blaming himself, that he shouldn't have even brung Ponyboy with him, because Ponyboy is still young and it didn't involve him. Ponyboy, realizing his mistake, he softened up and started crying with Johnny because he was sorry for what he did.

Another character who feels he doesn't belong is Johnny Cade. In the book, his parents neglected him and abused him, doing everything they can to hurt him. Since his parents didn't love him, the only people that really loved him were the Greasers. The Greasers made him feel like he belonged somewhere and that he was needed. They took him in and loved him as if they were one big happy family. They gave him a sense of belonging that hos parents couldn't give him. In the book, the church that Johnny and Ponyboy hid out at was on fire, and there were little kids trapped inside. While they were rescuing the kids, the ceiling collapsed and landed on Johnny, trapping him inside. But Ponyboy saw that he was smiling, during the rescue. In this case, the reason why is because he feels that he is needed and that he is the hero instead of him being trapped and neglected.

My last character that in the book, felt he didn't belong is Darry Curtis. He is more of a Soc than a Greaser, because he is good looking, has short hair, and he is educated. Actually, he is supposed to be in college but he didn't go because both his parents died in a car accident, and even with his scholarships, he can't go into college because he has no support. He had to give up everything for his family to survive. The reason Darry didn't become a Soc is because of his brothers. They gave him a sense of belonging. But he still thinks that he doesn't belong because he used to go to school, everyone liked him, and he even got a scholarship for the football team in cokkege while the Greasers are disliked by society, and they are not really educated because they don't have alot of money.

In my conclusion, the main part of this essay is that everyone has a sense of belonging, even if it doesn't seem like it. The people who love you give you a sense of belonging and make you feel loved. The inportance in this topic is that people want to feel like they belong. For example, if your best friend told you that you were the worst thing that ever lived, and everyone heard this, wouldn't you think you didn't belong? that no one cares and that no one loves you? You will always have someone who loves you, and that you will feel that you belong.

Avril Lavigne Essay

Avril Lavigne is one of the most famous singers in the world. She gives the Canadian Music industry such a great honour and fame because of her talents, and her music. Avril Lavigne is not only one of my favourite singers, but she is one of the most popular singers for teens. She has lead a talented life and has lead a contribution to the world of music, and inspiration to other Canadians.

Avril Ramona Lavigne Whitbley was born on September 27, 1984. She was born in Belleville Ontario, then moved to a small town called Napanee at the age of five and grew up there. She came from a French family, but she doesn’t know how to speak French. She grew up as a tomboy, where her hobbies were skateboarding, drinking, hanging out with the guys, and playing baseball and hockey. Her other favourite hobby is singing. Her mother discovered her singing talent when she sang along to Christian music. Her family were Christians, so she sang in the Gospel Choir at the local church and she taught herself how to play the guitar. She was discovered by her professional manager Cliff Fabri while singing country covers at a local bookstore. At the age of sixteen, she was signed by Ken Krongard to sing in a studio in New York City.

Her music genre is more Modern rock, Pop rock, Punk pop, Post grunge and Alternative rock. Let Go was her first album, which was released on June 24, 2002 reaching #1 in Canada. She described her first album to be a pop album “with a couple of rock songs in it”. After one month of it’s release, Let Go reached multi-platinum, then reached triple-platinum two weeks later. It sold over fifteen million copies worldwide on December 24. She was named “Best New Artist” at the 2002 MTV Music Awards, won four Junos in 2003, a World Music Award for “Best Selling Canadian Singer” and was nominated eight Grammys.

Her second album, Under My Skin was released on May 25, 2004, which also reached #1 in Canada. Avril Lavigne co-wrote most of the album with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk. Lavigne won two World Music Awards in 2004 for “World’s Best Selling Canadian Artist” and “World’s Best Pop/Rock Artist”. She received five Junos in 2005 including “Fan Choice Award”, “Artist of the Year”, and “Pop Album of the Year”. She also won an award for “Favourite Female Artist” at the Nickelodeon Kids’ Choice Awards. Avril Lavigne co-wrote the song “Breakaway” which was recorded by Kelly Clarkson for the soundtrack of the movie Princess Diaries 2 which was then later included in Kelly’s second album.

Her third album, The Best Damn Thing was released on April 17, 2007. Lavinges band members are: lead guitarist Devin Bronson, rhythm guitarist Craig Wood, bass guitarist Charlie Moniz, and Drum mist Matt Brann. She listed some of her current favourite bands were Blink182, Sum41, Green Day, and System of a Down. On February 24, she began dating Canadian band Sum41 lead singer and guitarist Deryck Whibley. On June 27, 2005, they became engaged to be married. On July 15, 2006, they got married.

Avril has helped a lot in Canadian Heritage. A lot of people want to be famous and are working hard on their dreams because of her. A lot of people my age or any age now want to become famous and live life in their own way. People also had their own thoughts about her and she didn’t let them affect her career or anything. In my opinion, she has an amazing talent. You can relate her music to real life and you will always remember it.

Avril Lavigne is a wonderful Canadian who has made a huge impact on Canadian Heritage. She discovered her singing talent even when she was a baby and was discovered at such a young age to sing and become famous. She has also co-written some songs for other singers in the past, like Miranda Cosgrove and Kelly Clarkson. She has won many awards, including Junos and Grammys because of her talent as a singer. Avril Lavigne influenced other Canadians like me to be who you are. Like what she said one time: “why should I care about what other people think of me? I am who I am, and I am who I want to be.”

I Am PoEm - Darry

I am caring and sensitive.
I wonder what the future will be.
I hear laughter in the distance.
I see clock hands going faster and faster.
I want time to come back.

I am caring and sensitive.
I pretend to be someone I am not.
I feel like I am burdening others.
I touch total darkness.
I worry that I will lose my family.
I cry now that I have made a mistake.

I am caring and sensitive.
I understand that I can`t bring people back.
I say that things will change happily.
I dream about happiness.
I try to make the best of it.
I am caring and sensitive.

Letter to SodaPop from Ponyboy

Dear Soda

Hello Sodapop. How's it going? What I am writing about is about the murder case about Johnny and the Socs. Do you remember that night when I came home from the movies with Two-bit and Johnny, and Darry hit me? well me and Johnny were walking in the park after I ran off when suddenly a blue Mustang was circling the park. Then five Socs came out of the car and were walking straight toward us, but they looked drunk. JOhnny was so scared that he was turning whiter than white. The Socs were mixing up trouble, calling us "white trash with long hair" so i said "you Socs are white trash with Mustangs and Madra sweaters." Then we started fighting. I tried to fight but one of the Socs grabbed me and held me back. Then he shoved my face in the big fountain. I tried to fight away from him, but he was stronger than he looked, and I was drowning. next thing I knew, I was lying on the ground. Then i saw Johnny. He had more fear on his eyes than I had ever seen before in my life. He had killed the Soc. The lead Soc was laying on the ground, with blood pouring everywhere. Johnny's switchblade was bloodsoaked. We decided to run away, but we needed some help. So we went to Buck Merril's place to get help from Dally. Dally gave us $50.00, clean clothes, a gun and directions to the place where he told us to hide out. The place was called Windrixville. In truth, I am scared for Johnny. I have never seen Johnny do such a thing, because he would never kill anyone. But he is my bestfriend and i don't think he had much of a choice, because that Soc was drowning me, and could have killed me. I miss you very much and I am mad at Darry. No one has ever hit me. Not even mom and dad have hit me before. To be honest, I don't think Darry likes me. He's always so mean and hard on me, like everything I do is all my fault. But you are my bestfriend. You understand everything, and you always make me happy even when I'm not.
I think you are wondering what I'm planning to do huh? well I'm not so sure about my plans now. All I want is to be home and forget everything, but I don't think Johnny will ever forget this. I want to help him. He has had enough in his life already, with his parents abusing him, getting jumped by the Socs, and now this.

Ponyboy and Greg Comparrison Essay

Ponyboy and Greg are very different people. Ponyboy lives in a place where poverty, and crime are common. Greg comes from an ideal family with parents that love him. Even though they are very different, they share some similarities.

One similarity is that they are both trying to fit in. Ponyboy feels that he doesn't fit in because he is the youngest in the gang. He tries to fit in by dressing, acting, and talking, even though he is not that type person, with a high IQ and good grades in school. Greg really wants to fit in, no matter what happens. He tries acting cool around other people, acting so he can get attention, and doing stuff that are the fad nowadays. He even tried changing his bestfriend Rowley, changing the way he dresses, acts, and the way he talks so he can make it to the top.

Another similiarity is that they were both bullied by older brothers. Ponyboy's older brother Darry is strict with him, and he's always so hard on him. I think the reason is that Darry is the type of person that doesn't like showing his emotions or true feelings. Darry loves Ponyboy, but since he is the oldest, if Ponyboy or Soda get hurt, then the blame is on him, and he doesn't want that. So he has to be strict, especially since their parents aren't there anymore. It is good that he is strict, but maybe he's being to hard on him. Soda's bestfriend Steve also bullys Ponyboy because he is young and he thinks he is just a tag-a-long kid in the gang. Greg's older brother Rodrick is the kind of the sibling that loves to get people in trouble, especially Greg. Since Rodrick is older, he bullies Greg to think he is cool, teasing him, and always giving Greg the blame. And since Rodrick thinks he is cool, he doesn't like Greg being in the way, because that is just the way he is.
My last similarity is that they both don't use their heads when it comes to thinking. Ponyboy's head is always dreaming, and imagining things in his head, and he over thinks things, not realizing, understanding the main points, not seeing the actual point, and he only sees what he sees. Greg didn't use his head in the story. He was so busy thinking about trying to make it to the top, that he didn't see what was going on around him. He didn't see that he was hurting people, especially Rowley, and he overthought things. He only saw the negative side of things, like if he didn't change Rowley, then he would be at the bottom of the pile, but since he hurt Rowley, now he's way at the bottom of the pile. If Greg would just be himself, then maybe people would accept him. He would do anything to make it to the top, getting people in trouble, lying to get himself out of trouble, and scheming against others to make them feel bad.
In my conclusion, the main point of my essay is that both Greg and Ponyboy need to use their heads in situations. Since they are both trying everything to fit in, it just makes them insecure. Greg would be popular if he had been himself, and tried not to care about what others thought of him, and Ponyboy just needs to understand that not all things have a bad meaning to it.

The Outsiders- Cast Sheet

PonyBoy Curtis

He is the youngest in the Curtis family. He is fourteen years old. Both his parents are dead. He is short, has long, light brown hair, and greenish-gray eyes. He is confused and sensitive, which means he doesn't like fighting. He likes to read books and watch movies. He is smart, but he doesn't use his head, which means he doesn't think. I chose Chris Pine to play Ponyboy because he was a shy boy, like Ponyboy, and he is young and caring.

Steve Randle

Steve is Soda's bestfriend and they have been friends since they were in elementary school. He is seventeen years old. He has thick, greasy hair, and tall. He has a specialty with cars, and can drive and operate anything on wheels. He is a show-off, cocky, and smart. I chose Robert Pattinson because to me, he is tall and cocky and he also has long hair.

Two-Bit Matthews

He is the oldest member of the Greaser gang. He can always make people laugh, and get away from anything, even from the cops. He can always brighten up your day and he is a wisecracker. He is six feet tall and has a stocky build. He has long, rusty sideburns, gray eyes and a big smile. He likes fights blonde girls, and learning in school. He has a specialty with knifes, especially with his black switchblade that he always carries with him. I chose Chris Martin as Two-bit because he looks kind of like Two-bit in the story.

Dally Winston

He is the toughest member in the gang, and the shortest by far. He has had a rough past, living in the West side of New York City, and got arrested at age ten. He has long, white blonde hair, and elfish like face, with high cheekbones, pointed chin, small, sharp teeth, big ears, ice blue eyes, and hates haircuts. I chose Eminem to play Dally because he looks like Dally, with the blue eyes, really blonde hair and he suits the character of him.

Johnny Cade

He is the youngest member in the gang, other than Ponyboy. He is sixteen years old and called everyone's "kid brother". He is the gang's pet, and he is called that because the gang felt sorry for Johnny because his parents were abusing him. He also got beat up by a rival gang called the Socs, so now, he is nervous, quiet, and meek. He has big, black eyes, dark, tanned skin, and long, curly, jet black hair. I chose Taylor Lautner to play Johnny because Taylot lautner is a good actor, and he can be quiet sometimes too. He also suits the look of Johnny.

Darry Curtis

He is the oldest in the Curtis family, and the legal guardian, since the parents have both died. He is twenty years old, six foot two, broad shouldered, and muscular. He has dark brown hair, and blue-green eyes. He is firm with alot of things, and doesn't have time alot because he's so busy with alot of things. He is actually supposed to be in college, but he's so busy that he doesn't even have time to think about college, and he doesn't have the money, even with his scholarships. I chose Arnold Schwarzenegger to play Darry because he is big and muscular and in some of Arnold's movies, he can act firm and hard, when actually, he is a good person.

 SodaPop Curtis

He is the second oldest in the Curtis family. He is sixteen years old, has dark-gold hair, dark brown eyes, and very good-looking. He understands everyone, and everything, and he isn't afraid of anything. He is Ponyboy's favourite brother in the family, because he is understanding and happy all the time. I chose Zac Efron to play SodaPop because in Zac's last movie, he was an outgoing person, understanding, happy,good-looking, and he wasn't afraid of alot of things.
